Immortality Denied
by Rob Morris
In Sisko's office, Ezri Dax shook her head to hear the orders she was given.

"Ben, what do you mean the Vulcan's name is now XY3?"

Sisko showed her the order.

"His actual name will be purged from all records. A virus will be introduced to get rid of it elsewhere. The hope is that within fifty years, the only thing known of him will be his violence--and the names and lives of his victims."

Ezri was still confused.

"Sounds unconstitutional."

Ben waved his hand.

"Wrong, old man. His trial rights, his appeals, his treatment--all will be scrutinized for fairness by outside inspectors. But his name, like all the names of spree or serial killers, are excised. Its a rough law, and its hard to make work. But though our Vulcan perpetrator wasn't seeking it, through this we deny him and all his kind immortality."

"Odd that Curzon never heard of it. When did this start?"

Sisko pulled up a file.

"In the early 21st Century, a craven coward wielding a high-caliber rifle terrorized the area near what was then the American capitol. He possibly left a calling card for his murders in the form of a message calling himself God."

Ezri winced.

"How vile."

Ben nodded.

"So it was decided that if these people wanted to take the name of God in vain by playing at being him in a murderous game...."

He smiled.

"...we'd take their names away."
