My main concern lies with Kes. Not only have her abilities increased tenfold, but she has grown distant--even cold."

Kes emerged from the holodeck.

"So--which one did you choose?"

Her voice appeared to echo.

"Why, Captain---I chose them all. I can do that now."

The coldness magnified.

"I can do anything I want."

Jack's eyes glowed from inside the brig.

"I took a disruptor bolt meant for you, Jean-Luc."

Picard nodded.

"You very nearly died as a result. I owe you a great deal."

"XO, your method of repayment is merde."

"Jack, these precautions are merely...."

"OBEY the protocols, Jean-Luc! You know, the ones that date from just after The Eugenics Wars, regarding artificial evolution?"

"It shouldn't come to that."

"Kill me, Jean-Luc. Or I will kill you, and give your bald head to my boy as a plaything--after I raise my family up."

"Jack, you are merely disoriented after our rough passage."

"Actually, Picard--I've never thought more clearly."
